Some print and broadcast media published false and erroneous interpretations of a paragraph in my weekly statement issued on Thursday, December 20, claiming that I insulted the Egyptian army and its leadership. In fact, this never happened.
None of their alleged insults were in the text of my statement as published and distributed to all media outlets.
The paragraph in question was about Egypt, its people and its political leaders throughout history. It did not mention anything about the military leadership in any way whatsoever.
This is the translation of text in question: “The Messenger of God, peace be upon him, in a positive recommendation, describes the people of Egypt as the best soldiers i.e. like good soldiers who need good leadership. Whereas these soldiers thus far had to follow corrupt leaders, what this phase of Egypt’s history requires is wise leaders and better awareness for those soldiers”.
So, this in context, while that paragraph is about the people of Egypt, the preceding paragraph talks about the political leadership clearly and in no ambiguous terms. The paragraph which follows that is about the recommendation of the Messenger of God (PBUH) about the Copts of Egypt.
Some individuals who have given up all hope in replicating the former regime are trying to fish in troubled waters, twisting words so desperately in order to distort the purposes of texts to suit their own agendas. Then they try to use some media outlets to stir up sedition.
But that will not fool the Egyptian people, especially Egypt’s great armed forces, who we appreciate and cherish, as we do all Egyptians. We certainly cannot forget their role throughout history in the protection of Egypt, its people and its revolution, as attested by all my previous articles and statements.
I solemnly urge the media to commit to accuracy, objectivity, honesty and professional standards, and not to pursue the murky paths of incitement, sowing seeds of discord and unrest among the Egyptian people. I further call on media professionals to verify stories through relevant sources rather publish misinterpreted statements deliberately for their own dubious purposes of subversion and treachery in this homeland.
