Muslim world issues top IIPU agenda

Iran’s parliament speaker says developments in Africa and the Middle East will be the main focus of the upcoming Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU) summit.

“Currently, in the Muslim world and the region, namely in Tunisia, Sudan, Lebanon and Palestine, sensitive events are being unfolded,” Ali Larijani told reporters before leaving Tehran for Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to attend an extraordinary IIPU summit.

“These issues will be high on the agenda at the conference,” the top parliamentarian was quoted by Mehr News Agency as saying.

He said a report released by the “fake” US-sponsored tribunal probing the assassination of former Lebanese Premier Rafiq Hariri showed that the court is not independent.

The parliament speaker said the developments in Lebanon are just a “plot” similar to what is taking place in Sudan, adding that a British-Zionist scheme is behind the developments in the African country.

Larijani then turned to Tunisia where, he said, people have been suffering under “dictatorship” and “pressures” for years.

He urged the parliaments of Islamic nations to sympathize with Tunisians and understand their sufferings.

The question of Palestine was another issue that Larijani highlighted.

He listed the US support for Tel Aviv and noted the Israeli blockade on Gaza, the destruction of historical and Islamic monuments and expansion of Jewish settlements as the most pressing issues which should take center stage at the IIPU summit.
