N-swap deal still on the table

The UN atomic watchdog says that a UN-brokered deal for nuclear swap between Iran and the West is “still on the table.”

The proposal made by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last October, “which was supported by France, Russia and the US, continues to be on the table,” said IAEA spokeswoman, Gill Tudor.

“The IAEA is not in a position to discuss the views of the parties involved, but it is aware that they are considering the best solution,” AFP quoted Tudor as saying on Wednesday.

“The IAEA will continue to work in good faith as an impartial intermediary, and we hope that agreement among the parties will be reached as quickly as possible, which will contribute to the establishment of confidence,” she added.

Under the terms of the proposal, the Islamic Republic would shipped to Russia and France most of its stockpile of enriched uranium for processing into fuel for Tehran Research Reactor that makes radioisotopes for medical use.

Citing the West’s previous breach of contract, Tehran has declared that the proposal does not provide enough guarantees that the West would fulfill its commitments under the deal.

Officials in Tehran had earlier voiced their readiness to accept the deal if the swap takes place in Brazil, Japan, Turkey or Iran’s southern island of Kish.
