The member-states of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in a statement on Wednesday voiced their support for Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, and underlined that diplomacy and dialogue is the only way to settle the nuclear dispute between Iran and the West.

The statement was read out by Iran’s Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency Reza Najafi in his capacity as NAM’s rotating head at the March meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors.

“Diplomacy and dialogue is the only method through which a comprehensive and sustainable solution to Iran’s nuclear issue can be achieved,” the NAM statement said.

The NAM member-states also welcomed cooperation between Iran and the IAEA as well as Tehran’s practical measures based on its earlier agreement with the UN nuclear watchdog agency.

The NAM also welcomed continued Iran-IAEA cooperation as stated in IAEA Secretary General Yukiya Amano’s latest report.

Meantime, the NAM member-states once again reiterated the basic and undeniable rights of all countries, including Iran, to develop, conduct research and use atomic energy for peaceful purposes, and voiced their opposition to any interpretation that will result in the prohibition or restriction on countries’ access and development of civilian nuclear technology.

Accordingly, the NAM member-states underscored that choices and decisions of different countries, including decisions by Iran for making peaceful uses of the nuclear technology and having nuclear fuel-cycles should be respected.

The NAM member-states reiterated that there should be no pressure or inappropriate meddling in IAEA’s activities, specially in the verification process, as such a move can jeopardize the IAEA’s efficiency and credibility.

Iran currently holds the rotating presidency of the NAM.

NAM is an international organization of states considering themselves not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. NAM is the largest grouping of countries outside of the United Nations.

NAM member states represent nearly two-thirds of the United Nations’ members and comprise 55% of the world population, particularly countries considered to be developing or part of the Third World.

Iran received NAM rotating presidency at the opening ceremony of the NAM summit in Tehran on August 26, 2012 from Egypt for a period of three years.
