Syria militants fired 7 rockets into Lebanon border towns

Lebanon’s security sources say the foreign-backed militant groups in Syria have lobbed more rockets into Lebanese towns near the Syrian border, causing damage but no casualties.

On Sunday, five rockets slammed into the border villages of al-Qasr and Hawsh al-Sayyed Ali, while two others landed in the heart of the town of Hermel. The attacks caused damage to buildings and parked cars, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The rockets fired into al-Qasr struck the fence of the Imam Zainul Abideen orphanage, next to a compound that houses about 450 children.

Mohammad al-Saeed, the director of the orphanage, said that all of the students were safe because they had been moved to the amphitheater of the building after an earlier shelling.

On April 19, Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour said Beirut was planning to file a complaint with the Arab League over a deadly attack by the militants on Lebanon’s soil.

Mansour stated that the security situation in Lebanon was deteriorating due to the ongoing turmoil across the border. “Lebanon security and stability are being threatened. We are preparing a memo to hand out to the Arab League on the violations going on our borders. Last week, two Lebanese civilians lost their lives due to shelling from armed Syrian opposition.”

“The armed [Syrian] opposition has adopted this attack, and has pledged more such attacks in the future. So, we are notifying the Arab League with this as it should take full responsibility over the issue,” Mansour said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad recently stated in an interview broadcast on Turkish television that if the militant groups take power in Syria, they could destabilize the entire Middle East for decades.

Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil that has gripped Syria since March 2011.

Several international human rights organizations have accused the militants of committing war crimes in Syria.
