NATO soldier killed in Afghanistan

A NATO soldier has been killed in an explosion in Afghanistan, bringing the total number of foreign casualties in the country this year to 172.

NATO’s International Security Assistance Force announced the death on Friday, but did not reveal the nationality of the deceased soldier.

However, more than two-thirds of the troops deployed in Afghanistan are from the United States, which has suffered the highest number of casualties in the country.

With a total of 520 foreign troops killed, 2009 has been the deadliest for the US-led forces in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion.
