Nigeria may have Africa’s largest economy and its biggest population, but it also has some of the continent’s most intractable problems: insecurity, unemployment and corruption.

Desperate for change, they voted a former military dictator back into office.

On the 29th of May, Muhammadu Buhari will become president Buhari, and he has warned that his All Progressives Congress party will govern Nigeria very differently from its predecessor.

He plans to defeat insecurity, tackle unemployment and kill corruption. But that’s easier said than done, especially given that so many of Nigeria’s institutions simply do not work, and that so many of the state coffers are empty.

In this programme we discuss the priorities and the scale of the challenge facing the new president.
