A car bomb attack claimed by the terrorist Daesh group has killed nine people and wounded dozens in Libya’s eastern coastal city of Derna.

“Some of the dead and wounded are civilians” in Sunday night’s attack, AFP quoted a local medical source as saying on Monday.

The Takfiri Daesh group said the attack was carried out by one of its Sudanese affiliates.

“Abu Jaafar al-Sudani blew up his car bomb… in the city of Derna, causing many dead and wounded,” read a statement posted on the Takfiri group’s website.

Derna was seized by Daesh late last year, but it was liberated last month.

Libya’s uprising in 2011 led to the ouster and the killing of its long-time dictator Muammer Gaddafi. Currently, the country is being run by two governments vying for political control over the country’s rich resources; one, lacking international legitimacy, in Tripoli; and the other, internationally-recognized, in the eastern port city of Tobruk.

The chaos in Libya has given opportunity to Daesh to spread its acts of terror there. Daesh’s reign of terror spreads through Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Egypt. The group is notorious for its atrocities, including mass killings, abductions and beheadings, against all ethnic and religious groups, Muslim or Christian.

Daesh has already beheaded dozens of people in Libya and attacked a number of foreign missions.
