No military solution to crisis in Syria

A group of international political activists headed by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has ruled out a military solution to the crisis in Syria.

According to AFP, The Elders, a group founded by former South African President Nelson Mandela, issued a statement on Wednesday, saying “there is no military solution to this conflict.”

The group said: “Therefore every effort must be made to stop further bloodshed and to re-energize the political process to put an end to the conflict that has devastated and brutalized Syria.”

US President Barack Obama is trying to convince the Congress to approve a military strike against Syria over an alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government.
Washington says it has obtained evidence proving that the Syrian army was behind the chemical attack near Damascus on August 21, which killed hundreds of Syrians.
The Syrian government has repeatedly said that the deadly attack was carried out by militants operating inside the country in a bid to draw in a foreign military intervention.
