No US manufacturing jobs added in April

A US jobs report shows that not one single job was added in the American manufacturing sector in April, a setback for President Barack Obama’s campaign promise of adding one million positions during his second term.

The Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) Job Tracker published the new figure on Saturday.

“The latest jobs report shows that we are a long way from a true resurgence in American manufacturing. We strongly believe that we won’t see real growth in manufacturing jobs without the right policies from Washington, DC,” said President of AAM Scott Paul.

The April figure is another blow to the Obama administration after the sector lost 3,000 jobs in March.

The US president’s job goal of adding one million factory jobs means that over 21,000 positions need to be created each month until the end of his second term.

However, since the beginning of 2013 only 39,000 jobs have been added to the manufacturing sector.

Obama set the goal during his last presidential campaign after the country lost 5.5 million manufacturing jobs between 2000 and 2009.

Also on Saturday, the Labor Department revealed that the overall unemployment rate in the US has decreased from 7.6 percent to 7.5 in April.
