Nuclear achievements neutralizing Western sanctions: Iran MP

Iranian lawmaker Mansour Haqiqatpour says the speedy progress of the country’s nuclear energy program has rendered illegal Western sanctions futile.

“To achieve their goals and [realize] their conspiracies, major powers use every inhumane method to hold back nations from progress and development,” deputy head of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said on Wednesday.

“The West’s pretext for imposing unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic, is Iran’s capability to gain access to peaceful nuclear energy…. Major powers want to retain their nuclear monopoly and prevent countries like Iran from making nuclear accomplishments,” he added.

The lawmaker said the Iranian nation is determined to attain self-sufficiency in all areas and support the nuclear energy program.

The West is well-aware of the civilian nature of Iran’s nuclear activities but continues its “unjust” sanctions to break the resistance of the Iranian nation and turn them against the Islamic Republic, he noted.

Haqiqatpour described the West’s unilateral sanctions against the Iranian nation as a clear violation of human rights and more proof of the expansionist nature of the US and European countries.

The US, Israel, and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the US and the European Union using this pretext to impose several rounds of sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Tehran refutes the allegation, maintaining that as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
