NY confab urges end to Iran sanctions

The American Iranian Friendship Committee has held a conference that calls for an end to misconceptions deliberately publicized by the mainstream media as well as the US-led economic sanctions on Iran.

Many Iranian and US citizens participated in the Friday event, held in New York City, to express their displeasure over the persistently false image propagated by the corporate media against the Islamic Republic, and to display their solidarity with the Iranian nation, a Press TV correspondent reported from New York.

Participants urged Israel and the United States to discontinue their double standard positions regarding the Iranian nation and government, calling for an end to economic sanctions and military threats against Tehran.

They further called on the international media to respect Iran’s right to nuclear energy.

Former CIA analyst Ray McGovern and Brian Becker of ANSWER Coalition were among speakers that addressed the conference.

The lecturers agreed that United States’ long standing alliance with Israel has harmed Washington’s interests and relations with the rest of the world.

Earlier on Thursday, US Treasury Department imposed another set of unilateral sanctions against 24 Iranian companies ahead of the next round of comprehensive talks between Iran and major global powers.

Meanwhile, representatives of over 120 countries from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Non-aligned Movement, Group of 77 and the Arab League are in Tehran for a two-day tour of the country’s nuclear sites.

Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA Ali Asghar Soltanieh said on Saturday that Tehran invited the diplomats representing political and geographical groups of the agency to tour the country’s nuclear facilities in a goodwill gesture to demonstrate transparency of the country’s nuclear program in a spirit of international cooperation.
