Obama ‘left’ alone in his Syria attack

Obama-Kerry-condemn-Syrian-chemical-attackMilitary action against Syria is different from what happened in Libya in 2011 because US President Barack Obama “is pretty much left to his own devices” now and has only the support of “his Israel lobby” in the Syrian case, says Wayne Madsen, an American author and investigative journalist.

“What makes Syria different from Libya is the United Kingdom is not going to be part of any US action. It looks like President Francois Hollande in France is in trouble with his Parliament because they’re very reluctant to attack Syria. NATO Secretary General Rasmussen said NATO will not be part of an attack on Syria,” Madsen told Press TV on Monday.

In an unclassified intelligence report on Friday, the US claimed the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad launched a chemical attack in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21, killing hundreds of people. The Syrian government has strongly rejected the allegation.

Russia has said the evidence Washington provided for such allegation is “inconclusive,” arguing a “regime of secrecy” by the West is unacceptable.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said the information provided to Russia was just “some sketches” and contained “no supporting facts.”

“Russia has learned from the US and NATO attack on Libya what happens when it gives the UN Security Council the benefit of the doubt on something like that,” said Madsen

A number of US lawmakers have also criticized Obama’s draft resolution for military action against Syria, saying it is too broad in scope and duration.

Last week, President Obama announced that he would seek authorization from Congress to launch another war in the Middle East. But an unnamed State Department official now says the president has decided to strike the Arab country even without congressional approval.

Over 100 US Congressmen have already signed a letter saying it would be unconstitutional for Obama to take military action without authorization from Congress.
