Opposition Figure: US Supporting Bahraini Regime’s Crackdown on Peaceful Protests

Secretary General of Bahrain’s National Democratic Alliance Fadel Abbas lambasted the US for its strong support for the Al Khalifa regime’s crackdown on popular protests and crimes against civilians.

“Bahrain is ruled by an atmosphere of terror and suppression, and the US is supporting the Al Khalifa regime’s crackdown on people,” Abbas told Iran’s Arabic-language news network, Al-Alam, on Monday.

He stressed that Washington is behind the Bahraini regime’s crimes against civilians and is, thus, an accomplice in the inhuman crimes.

In similar remarks a few days ago, another prominent Bahraini opposition figure took the US, Britain and Saudi Arabia responsible for the continued suppression of the people by the Manama regime.

“Westerners and Saudi Arabia are responsible for all the sufferings of the Bahraini nation,” Ali al-Moshaima, son of Bahrain’s imprisoned revolutionary leader Sheikh Hassan al-Moshaima, told FNA.

Anti-government protesters have been holding peaceful demonstrations across Bahrain since mid-February 2011, calling for an end to the Al Khalifa dynasty’s over-40-year rule.

Violence against the defenseless people escalated after a Saudi-led conglomerate of police, security and military forces from the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) member states – Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar – were dispatched to the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom on March 13, 2011, to help Manama crack down on peaceful protestors.

So far, tens of people have been killed, hundreds have gone missing and thousands of others have been injured.

Police clampdown on protesters continues daily. Authorities have tried to stop organized protests by opposition parties over the past month by refusing to license them and using tear gas on those who turn up.
