A high-ranking Pakistani official says Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s upcoming visit to Iran will help the further promotion of bilateral ties between the Islamic Republic and Pakistan.

According to Press TV, Pakistani Foreign Office Spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said in her weekly press briefing in Islamabad on Thursday that the visit will take place before May 15.

She further stated that high-level interaction and engagement are underway between Pakistani and Iranian official in order to make Sharif’s visit to Iran as substantive as possible.

Pakistani Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry stated on April 16 that the exact date of the Pakistani prime minister’s visit is being worked out.

Sartaj Aziz, a senior advisor to Sharif on national security and foreign affairs, had said on April 1 that the Pakistani premier will pay an official visit to Iran in May or June to hold talks with top Iranian officials. He added that the visit will aim to improve relations between the two neighboring states.

During a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting of the Developing Eight (D8) group in Islamabad on December 19, 2013, Sharif said Pakistan places strong emphasis on friendly relations with all neighboring countries, including Iran, on the basis of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
