Pakistan’ prosecutor in case against Pervez Musharraf assassinated

h.sharifi20130503080323877The main state prosecutor in the murder case against Pakistan’s former military ruler Pervez Musharraf has been assassinated in the capital city of Islamabad.

Pakistan’s police said the country’s Federal Investigation Agency prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar was shot multiple times as he was driving to an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad on Friday.

“Chaudhry Zulfiqar was driving his car. He lost control and the car crushed a woman passer-by,” the local police stated, adding that Zulfiqar was “rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.”

Pakistani authorities said the woman passer-by was killed in the crash and Zulfiqar’s bodyguard was injured in the shooting.

Zulfiqar was leading a number of cases against Musharraf, including one that alleged the former Pakistani ruler had prior knowledge about the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007.

The Bhutto case is the second of three cases against Musharraf dating back to his military rule from 1999 to 2008. Musharraf is also accused in a case relating to the death of a Baluch leader during a 2006 military operation.

A Pakistani court has banned Musharraf from running for public office for the rest of his life, putting an end to his ambitions for a political comeback.

Pervez Musharraf is currently held under house arrest, which will extend beyond the general elections of May 11.
