Pakistan to head Board of Governors

Pakistan’s envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ansar Parvez has been chosen as the new head of the agency’s Board of Governors.

According to a statement by the IAEA, Pakistan, which is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), took over the agency’s 35-member board of governors on Monday.

Pakistan will preside over meetings in which IAEA inspectors deliver reports on Iranian and Syrian nuclear activities and supervise the approval of atomic-technology aid for one year.

Denmark and Ukraine’s envoys John Hartmann Bernhard and Olena Mykolaichuk were elected as Vice-Chairmen.

The Vienna-based IAEA was established as an autonomous organization on 29 July 1957, and reports to both the UN General Assembly and Security Council.
