A fire in an apartment block for refugees in the city of Hamburg in Germany has killed a Pakistani mother and her two children, police say.

The fire at the asylum seeker home broke out on Wednesday night in the Eimsbuttel area of the city, The Local reported on Thursday.

The mother, 33, along with her two sons, aged six and seven, died of smoke inhalation while trying to climb downstairs, according to a spokesman for the city’s fire service.

At least 27 other people were injured in the incident, mainly due to breathing fumes.

According to initial findings, the fire started in the fuse box due to a short circuit in the wiring, but police are continuing their investigation into the incident.

“Investigations so far show a technical defect cannot be entirely ruled out, at the same time, suspected arson is also being investigated as a cause,” police said.
