Parliament Intensifies Diplomatic Steps to Free Abducted Pilgrims in Syria

The Iranian parliament plans to dispatch a delegation to Turkey in coming days as part of a diplomatic step to secure freedom of 48 Iranian pilgrims kidnapped in Syria in August.

The delegation, comprising members of parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, is due to visit Turkey next week to discuss fate of Iranian nationals.

The parliamentary delegation will meet with senior Turkish officials to discuss ways to help secure the release kidnapped Iranian nationals.

Iran is using all diplomatic, political and security means to release the 48 Iranian pilgrims.

Ever since the abductions took place, the Foreign Ministry and the Iranian embassy in Damascus have been pursuing the fate and release of the kidnapped Iranian nationals through different channels.

On August 4, armed insurgents in Syria kidnapped 48 Iranian pilgrims who were traveling on a bus from Damascus International Airport to the shrine of Hazrat Zainab (AS) on the outskirts of Damascus.

The terrorist group which has kidnapped the Iranians threatened last month that they would execute their hostages unless Syria withdraws from the embattled Eastern Ghuta area of Damascus province.

It was the second time the rebels issued such a threat against the Iranian pilgrims.

The abductors later changed their mind and did not carry out their threat.
