Pepper-spraying cop suffers injury

The former police officer, John Pike, who pepper-sprayed students during an Occupy Wall Street protest held at the University of California, says he has been suffering psychiatric injury from the 2011 incident.

He is now appealing for worker’s compensation and has a settlement conference on August 13 in Sacramento, the Huffington Post reported.
In November 2011, Pike and another officer used pepper spray on more than a dozen of seated Occupy protesters. Nine of the protesters were treated at the scene and two were taken to hospital.
In July 2012, Pike was fired after a task force investigation concluded that his act was unjustifiable.
The task force had previously reported that the type of pepper spray used by Pike and his colleague was not an “authorized weapon of use” by the University of California Police Department.
The video of the incident, which went viral, showed Pike and the other officer spraying students directly in their faces at close range.
A number of hackers posted Pike’s information online, an action, which made him face scores of threats. An Alameda County Court judge then ruled against revealing the names of other officers at the scene.
However, a state appeals court ruled this week that media outlets are entitled to identify a dozen University of California police officers who were interviewed about the use of pepper spray at UC Davis.
