Plane crash leaves 4 dead in southern Iran

A small plane has crashed in southern Iran, killing all of its four crew members, a report says.

The Falcon jet 20, which belonged to Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) of Iran, was on a test flight when it crashed four kilometers east of Iran’s Kish Island in the Persian Gulf on Monday, IRNA reported.

Rescuers have recovered all the four bodies and the incident is being investigated.

In the past decade, Iran has witnessed several major air accidents blamed on its aging aircraft due to the US sanctions that prevent Iran from buying aircraft spare parts.

The latest major crash occurred in January 2011, when a passenger plane broke into pieces on impact while trying an emergency landing in a snowstorm in northwestern Iran, killing 77 people.

In July 2009, a Russian-made jetliner crashed in Iran’s northwest shortly after taking off from the capital, killing all the 168 people on board.

In the worst air accident, a Russian-made Ilyushin 76 crashed in the mountains of southeastern Iran in February 2003, killing 302 people on board.
