Possessing WMD not in Iran interests

3ccfd6c3ab7cf547f76c45cb88b58545_LIran’s President Hassan Rouhani says the country has never sought Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and believes possession of such arms would not serve its national interests, whatsoever.

According to Press TV, the president in an address in Tehran on Monday honoring leading local researchers said “Our country has never been, and is not after WMD.”
The president emphasized “Not only with regard to rationality and our national interests we have not pursued weapons of mass destruction; but with respect to religious beliefs this nation is not after WMDs and doesn’t consider it among its national interests or even its defence doctrine.”
He added “This principle serves as our guideline in conducting research.”
President Rouhani’s remarks come as the United States and its major allies continue to accuse the Islamic Republic of pursuing nuclear weapons under the guise of a nuclear energy program.
During his Monday address, President Rouhani further underlined the significance of conducting useful research, stressing that scholarly research by Iranian students and academicians must be carried out based on the country’s needs and available resources, or the effort would be in vain.
The president also urged local researchers to pay due regard to environmental problems, including water shortage.
