Pres. Rouhani urges investigation into attack on Iranian border guards

In a letter to Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani called for an investigation into a terrorist attack on Iranian border guards along the border with Pakistan.

In a meeting on Thursday, Iran’s ambassador to Islamabad Mehdi Honardoost presented President Rouhani’s letter to Tehmina Janjua, the foreign secretary of Pakistan.

Ms. Janjua sympathized on behalf of her respective government with the Iranian government and nation over the martyrdom of a number of the Iranian border guards in an ambush by terrorists who operated from the Pakistani soil.

She said that Islamabad feels duty-bound to cooperate with Tehran over immediate investigation into the terrorist incident.

Armed bandits affiliated to the so-called Jaish ul-Adl (Army of Justice) terrorist group attacked the Iranian border guards from the Pakistan’s soil on April 26, killing 11 Iranian border guards, including 3 officers and 8 privates in an ambush in Mirjaveh region some 75 km to the eastern city of Zahedan, capital of the Sistan and Baluchestan province, neighboring Pakistan.

In his message to Pakistani prime minister, President Rouhani referred to Tehran’s good relations with Islamabad, expressing regret that the Iranian border guards come repeatedly under attack by rented terrorists from the Pakistani soil.

Calling for an investigation into the case, President Rouhani urged Pakistani prime minister to bring the perpetrators of this terrorist attack to justice.
