President Assad Appears in Eid Prayers, Refutes Claims of Convoy Attack

assad (3)Syrian President Bashar al-Assad participated Thursday in Eid al-Fitr prayers at Anas Bin Malek Mosque in Damascus.

The Syrian TV aired footage of al-Assad praying in the mosque following armed groups claims of an attack on his motorcade.

The so-called “Al-Sham Liberation Brigade” and “the Free Syrian Army” said their militants targeted al-Assad’s motorcade with mortar shells that was on its way to the mosque.

Al-Arabiya channel quoted Firas Bitar, the Brigade’s commander, as saying that his group targeted al-Assad’s motorcade with 17 mortar rounds.

Bitar said the attack was planned after they received information about the path of the convoy.

Al-Arabiya also quoted Omar Hamzeh as saying that the FSA hit the Syrian President motorcade, but that they have no word on his fate.

Following the rebel claims, Syria’s state TV showed footage of al-Assad praying next to Syria’s Grand Mufti Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun.

“These reports are totally false. The president was driving his car himself, he attended the prayer and greeted people… everything is normal,” Information Minister Omran al-Zohbi told state television.
