President-elect, Majlis speaker discuss key Iran issues

fathi20130616160842200President-elect Hassan Rohani and Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani have exchanged views on leading issues and problems that Iran is currently grappling with.

The president-elect and the Majlis speaker held a meeting on Sunday, one day after the official announcement that Rohani won the 11th presidential election following a vote that saw a massive popular turnout on June 14.

Larijani later said that during the meeting, the present situation of the country and the necessity for tackling inflation and unemployment had been discussed.

The Majlis speaker added that the two sides had also discussed the new administration.

Rohani, for his part, said the country’s problems would not be resolved overnight and emphasized that difficulties must be gradually settled through consultation with experts.

“In this meeting, [we] discussed important issues that we are facing in the country, particularly cooperation between the [new] administration and the Majlis,” the president-elect added.

Rohani stated that post-election celebrations showed that Iranians are hopeful about the future.

Rohani emerged victorious in Iran’s 11th presidential election, which was marked by high voter turnout, by winning 50.7 percent of a total of 36,704,156 valid ballots counted.

The Interior Ministry put voter turnout at 72.7 percent.

On Saturday, Rohani’s jubilant fans packed the streets of Tehran and a number of other cities, cheering, chanting slogans in his support, and setting off fireworks to celebrate his victory.
