Presidential runner Rohani hopeful of wining over principlists, reformists

Independent presidential hopeful, Hassan Rohani, says he enjoys popularity and widespread support of both principlist and reformist political parties to contest in Iran’s June 14 election.

“I believe moderates from both camps will vote for me,” he told reporters after he signed up for the presidency at the Iranian Interior Ministry in Tehran on Tuesday.

Rohani, a former chief nuclear negotiator, has been critical of the current political atmosphere in Iran, promising to create a more open and tolerant ambiance should he win the presidency.

Rohani is currently serving as president of the Center for Strategic Research of the Expediency Council (EC). The EC arbitrates between parliament and the top oversight body, the Guardian Council.

He is considered a close ally of former presidents Mohammad Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Registration of hopefuls for Iran’s 11th presidential election officially began on Tuesday, and hopefuls have five days, until May 11, to sign up for the presidential vote.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election, and the Guardian Council vets the candidates for qualifications.
