Supporters of Egypt’s ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, have staged protest rallies in Egypt rejecting a call by the country’s interim prime minister to “immediately” end their protests.

Carrying pictures of Morsi, the demonstrators took to the streets in central Cairo and in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria on Friday.

According to security officials, police in the town of Fayoum, south of Cairo, clashed with pro-Morsi supporters and fired tear gas to disperse them.

The Anti-Coup Pro-Democracy Alliance, which is one of the largest political formations in Egypt, announced earlier in the day it would organize marches from different mosques in Cairo following noon prayers.

Egypt has witnessed non-stop demonstrations in support of the country’s first democratically elected president, since he was toppled by the army on July 3.

On Thursday, pro-Morsi protesters reaffirmed their call for his reinstatement and chanted slogans against army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Interim President Adly Mahmoud Mansour has said that diplomatic efforts by envoys from foreign countries, including the United States, to resolve the crisis in Egypt had failed.
