Iran’s Prosecutor General says ‘a considerable number of’ the individuals arrested in the course of Iran’s post-election protests will be released by Friday.

“God willing, another considerable number of the prisoners will be freed by the end of the week [Friday],” Qorbanali Dorri-Najafabadi said on Wednesday.

Massive opposition protests followed the June 12 presidential election, in which incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won a second term in office with almost two-thirds of votes.

Thousands were detained in the aftermath of the vote; the majority of detainees have since been released.

Najafabadi expressed hope that that the fate of all those arrested during the protests would be decided by the birth anniversary of the twelfth Imam, Mahdi (PBUH), on August 7.

The Rapporteur of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Kazem Jalali, said on Tuesday that 140 of the detainees who had minor charges had been released on bail.

According to the head of Tehran’s Evin prison, 90 of the 140 detainees were released Tuesday night while the rest of them are scheduled to be freed today.
