Protest to call for Livni arrest during London visit

A demonstration is being held outside Prime Minister David Cameron’s Office to protest against a visit by former Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni on Thursday.

The protest, organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and supported by Friends of al-Aqsa, coincides with Livni holding talks with Foreign Secretary William Hague.
PSC said it was demanding that a warrant is issued to arrest the former Zionist Israeli foreign minister for overseeing war crimes committed during the massacre of more than 1400 Palestinians in Gaza.
Her visit is the first test of changes made in Britain’s universal jurisdiction laws last month aimed to prevent Israeli leaders being arrested for alleged war crimes.
The change in the universal jurisdiction laws now, requires the approval of Britain’s Director of Public Prosecutions before an arrest warrant can be issued for alleged war crimes.
The amendment comes after Livni was forced to cancel a visit to Britain in 2009, when an application for a private arrest warrant was successfully issued against her for war crimes committed during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza.
“She feels that she can do so now (visit the UK) because our government – with the support of the opposition party – has just changed the law on universal jurisdiction,” the PSC said.
