Rafsanjani warns of Qur’an desecration

A senior Iranian cleric has warned against the recent desecration of the Holy Qur’an in the US, saying the move will be harmful to countries which act against Islamic beliefs.

“The outcomes of such insulting moves will not be in favor of anti-Islamic countries and will harm the main perpetrators of these inhumane and immoral measures,” Fars news agency quoted Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani as saying on Saturday.

The senior Iranian official further called on Muslims across the world to remain vigilant to counter such “heinous moves and angry attitudes.”

Ayatollah Rafsanjani said the desecration of religious values is not an issue that can be ignored easily and added that it shows the outrage of arrogant powers at the spread of Islam and the Qur’an among world nations.

Florida pastor Terry Jones floated the idea of torching the Holy Qur’an on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Although the pastor called off his plans, other extremists in the United States tore pages and burned copies of the Muslim holy book on the ninth year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

The act sparked outrage in the Muslim world with millions demonstrating across the globe to denounce the desecration of the holy book.
