Region turning into arsenal of Western weapons: Iran

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) said on Tuesday that some countries, by relying on oil revenues, are turning the region into an arsenal of Western weapons.

“The world needs to distance itself from violent, extremist ideologies and activities, but some countries, having supported terrorism, rely on their oil revenues to change the region into an arsenal of Western weapons, spreading insecurity and violence,” said Ali Shamkhani who is in Russia to participate in the 8th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues.

Shamkhani, was welcomed upon arrival by Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Mehdi Sanai and a Russian delegation.

“The international conference will contribute to security promotion, particularly with regard to fighting against terrorism,” he said.

Shamkhani is expected to deliver a speech at the security meeting which is attended by representatives from 100 countries.

The main topics of the three-day conference, hosted by Russian Federation Security Council, include cyber and intelligence security, regional and global threats and challenges, sources of crises, crisis formation and the way to address them through promoting convergence among countries and implementing joint policies.

Shamkhani, heading the Iranian delegation, is going to elaborate on security issues and political and economic developments of the region as well as sharing experiences Iran has and strategies adopted by the Islamic Republic to create a common ground to confront terrorism.
