Regional uprisings herald Islamic ME

Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says the expansion of recent developments in the region heralds the emergence of an Islamic Middle East.

Addressing the first International Conference on Islamic Awakening in Tehran on Sunday, Salehi said recent uprisings in the Arab world have their roots in the unhealthy and oppressive relations between certain governments and their nations during past decades.

The Iranian foreign minister described the uprisings as the “natural reaction of Muslims” versus oppressive policies of their ruling regimes.

Salehi slammed the interference of foreign countries in regional affairs, accusing them of attempting to hijack recent revolutions in the Middle East and North of Africa for their own “illegitimate interests.”

More than 500 scholars and prominent figures from 80 countries are participating in the two-day conference, which kicked off in Tehran on Saturday.

The conference will also discuss and analyze the history and basic tenets of the Islamic Awakening as well as figures that have played a role in such movements.

The in-depth study of a unified Islamic front and the issues and problems it faces as well as the goals and prospects of Islamic Awakening are among other topics of discussion at the conference.
