Bahraini people have held fresh demonstrations across the Persian Gulf kingdom to protest against the jail sentence given to prominent opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman.

Anti-regime protesters staged the rallies in the streets of the capital Manama and several other cities and villages across Bahrain on Friday to demand the release of all political prisoners, including Salman, the secretary general of Bahrain’s main opposition bloc al-Wefaq National Islamic Society.

Reports say that Al Khalifa regime security forces have attacked demonstrators in the village of Eker, south of Manama, and Sitra Island, southeast of the capital.

Tensions have been simmering in Bahrain since mid-June, when a Bahraini court sentenced 49-year-old Salman to four years in prison on a number of charges, including insulting the Interior Ministry and inciting others to break the law. He was acquitted of seeking regime change.

However, Salman, who was detained in December 2014, has strongly denied the charges, emphasizing that he has been seeking reforms in his country through peaceful means.

Anti-regime protesters have been staging demonstrations on the streets of Bahrain since mid-February 2011, calling for the Al Khalifa family to relinquish power.

The ongoing violent crackdown on peaceful rallies has left scores of Bahrainis killed and hundreds of others wounded.
