Rouhani due in Turkey in month

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is reportedly due to visit Turkey in late May or early June.

According to Press TV, on Thursday, Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News quoted diplomatic sources as saying that negotiations on scheduling the visit are underway through diplomatic channels and the exact date is still undecided.

Iran and Turkey intend to reach an agreement in their current talks on energy-related issues.

The two neighbors are also expected to ink several political, economic and cultural deals at a cooperation council meeting.

“Turkish and Iranian officials have continued discussions on the issue since the last visit of (Turkish) Prime Minister Erdogan to Tehran, and we would like to finalize it through a high level cooperation council meeting,” the daily reported.

The Turkish premier paid an official visit to Tehran at the head of a high-ranking delegation in late January and discussed key bilateral and regional issues with senior Iranian officials.

During his visit, Erdogan called for closer economic relations between Tehran and Ankara, stressing that his country is in need of Iran’s energy resources, including natural gas.

On January 31, Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said his country may double natural gas imports from Iran if the two countries agree on a price.

Iran owns the world’s largest natural gas reserves and is Turkey’s second-biggest gas supplier after Russia.

Iran’s natural gas is of crucial importance to Turkey as the energy-hungry country uses a significant portion of imported Iranian gas to generate electricity.
