Rouhani ends meeting with EU officials

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has ended his meeting with top European Union officials in New York.

The meeting took place on Thursday on the sidelines of the 68th annual session of the UN General Assembly among President Rouhani, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the head of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.
During the meeting, Rouhani said that some efforts that are aimed at isolating Tehran reduce mutual trust between Iran and the EU. He also touched upon Iran’s nuclear program, saying that Iran wants to have equal nuclear rights as other countries.
Rompuy said the EU is ready to preserve Iran’s right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
The meeting came ahead of foreign ministerial talks between Iran and the six major world powers of the 5+1 group — the US, the UK, France, China, and Russia plus Germany — which focused on Iran’s nuclear energy program. It also marked the highest-level of direct contact between Tehran and Washington in six years.
