Russia following own agenda on Iran

The Kremlin foreign policy aide says Russia pursues an independent policy and its stance on Tehran’s nuclear program is neither in support of the US nor Iran.

In response to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s critique of Moscow’s position on slapping more sanctions on Iran, Sergei Prikhodko said Russia is “guided by its long-term government interests,” RIA Novosti reported.

“Our position is the position of Russia; it reflects the interests of all Russian peoples, that is why it can be neither pro-American nor pro-Iranian.”

Iran, Turkey and Brazil issued a declaration on May 17 based on which Tehran agreed to send its low enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for fuel for its research reactor.

Russia welcomed the Tehran declaration but later gave in to the US-led campaign and signaled support for the imposition of tougher UN Security Council sanctions against Iran.
