Russia special envoy visits Tehran to discuss regional issues

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy for the Middle East has arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, to discuss regional developments with Iranian officials.

Mikhail Bogdanov, who is also Russia’s deputy foreign minister, arrived in Tehran with his entourage on Wednesday.

The visit is made at the invitation of Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

The two sides, who had previously held another meeting in Moscow in February, are expected to discuss the developments across the Middle East, the Persian Gulf and North Africa.

Iran and Russia have always held political consultations on different matters, particularly on issues of mutual interest such as Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East.

Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Reza Sajjadi had said earlier that the Syrian crisis will top the agenda of Bogdanov’s visit.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldier and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of militants are foreign nationals.
