A Russian official says Moscow plans to import foodstuffs, including meat and fish, from Iran in 2015 adding transactions will not be done in US dollars.

The first consignments of Iranian food products will be exported to Russia in January 2015, Alexey Alexeyenko, an official with Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) was quoted as saying by Russian news agency Itar-Tass on Sunday.

“It is planned to import 20,000 tons of high-quality trout and at least 3,000 tons of shrimps and sea foods from Iran,” Alexeyenko said.

The Russian official made the remarks following a visit to Iran to “coordinate quality-related issues and choose companies that will supply food products to Russia.”

He said that some 20 Iranian companies were certified by Rosselkhoznadzor to export their products to Russia.

He also said that trade transactions between Iranian and Russian companies will not be carried out in US dollars.

“Settlements will be executed either in the national currencies or on the basis of supplies of products both sides are interested in,” Alexeyenko said.

Iran and Russia have recently boosted their trade and economic ties.

Earlier in September, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Tehran and Moscow had signed projects worth 70 billion euros to develop their trade ties. He said that Russia was ready to export products and services to Iran while it was keen to import required services and products from the Islamic Republic.
