Anad al-Jabouri, the new governor of Iraq’s Salahuddin province, escaped an assassination attempt in the city of Tikrit on Friday.
“A suicide bomber driving a bomb-laden vehicle attempted to kill al-Jabouri in the Northern part of Tikrit, but the governor’s guard was killed and three others were injured in the attack,” Al-Sumeriya quoted a source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, as saying.

Salahuddin is an ethnically and religiously mixed province along the Tigris River North of Baghdad that has been the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the recent months.

Recently, Iraqi security forces killed a senior commander of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group in a military operation in Salahuddin province.

On Sunday, the Iraqi forces killed an ISIL commander, known by his nom de guerre Abu Ibrahim al-Shishani in Salahuddin.

Shishani was responsible for organizing ISIL terrorist attacks against Baiji oil refinery, 40 kilometers North of Tikrit, over the past month.

It is not clear yet if the assassination attempt was conducted in retaliation for the killing of the ISIL commander.
