Saleh forces kill 11 civilians in Yemen

Yemeni security forces have killed 11 people during their attacks against civilians in the capital, Sana’a, and the southern city of Taizz.

On Tuesday, Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh’s elite Republican Guard and the country’s special police units attacked local residents in four parts of Taizz, killing 7 civilians and injuring 22 others, AFP reported.

The attacks continued into the night, said a medical source on condition of anonymity, fearing regime reprisal.

Taizz is one of the main focuses of the pro-democracy movement against the US-backed regime.

Earlier in the day, security forces fired shells into a popular shopping district of Yemen’s capital, killing four civilians, including two children. The attack was launched as thousands of demonstrators had gathered there as well as elsewhere in the capital, calling for the Saleh’s trial.

The impoverished country has been rocked since January by near-daily mass protests, demanding the removal of the regime as well as an end to corruption and unemployment.

Nearly 40 percent of Yemen’s population live on USD 2 a day or less and a third are struggling with chronic hunger.

Hundreds of Yemenis have been killed and thousands more injured since the onset of the popular uprising during regime-ordered crackdown.
