Sanctions against Iran sign of US imperialism: Analyst

365823_Justice-DepartmentThe US sanctions against Iran are the manifestation of Washington’s imperialistic policies aimed at waging economic warfare against other nations, a political analyst tells Press TV.

In a Friday interview, Brian Becker, with the ANSWER Coalition, pointed to the US sanctions against Iran over its nuclear energy program, saying, “It is just really a sign of a great imperial power. Only the most imperialist country in the world could actually affectively carry out this kind of use of economic warfare against the rest of the world.”

The analyst noted that the poor, particularly the children of poor social classes, are the first victims of the sanctions, because the purchasing power dramatically drops due to the subsequent soaring inflation.

His comments come after the US Department of Justice recently said that Washington is mulling a 10-billion-dollar fine on French bank BNP Paribas for breaching sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

BNP Paribas, which is one of Europe’s biggest banks, will be also deprived of providing services in dollars if the penalty is imposed.

French authorities say the penalties could destabilize the French financial system and slow down France’s economic recovery.

At the beginning of 2012, the United States and the European Union imposed new sanctions on Iran’s oil and financial sectors with the goal of preventing other countries from purchasing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with the Central Bank of Iran. The sanctions were imposed under the allegation that Iran’s nuclear energy program is geared towards non-civilian purposes.

Tehran has categorically rejected the allegation.
