Saudi Arabia disbands rights organization Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA), jail activists

n00245754-b
A Riyadh court Sentenced two prominent human rights and political activists to lengthy jail terms for allegedly rebelling against the authority of the King and running an illegal organization.
Mohammed al-Qahtani was given a 10-year jail sentence, while Mohammed al-Hamid’s earlier sentence of six years was upheld and a further five-year term added.

The court also disbanded their organization, the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association – ACPRA –

The court decision comes on the back drop of a media campaign against the activists alleging they were both calling for unrest in the kingdom, urging people to rise up against the monarchy.

In September 2012, Qahtani already warned he would continue his activism despite state repression.

An appeal will be heard next month
