Saudi soldier killed in Yemen’s retaliatory attack

Yemeni fighters and allies in the army have launched another attack on Saudi military positions in the south of the kingdom, killing a soldier and inflicting losses on its military infrastructure.

Yemen’s al-Masirah TV said on Wednesday that the Saudi officer was killed when Yemenis targeted Tal’a military base in Najran province.

The attack was in line with Yemen’s retaliatory action against Saudi Arabia. Riyadh has been involved in more than two years of a devastating campaign against Yemen.

Yemenis also carried out a successful attack on Hajar military position, a key base in Saudi Arabia’s Assir region. Al-Masirah said two weapons depots and two armored vehicles were destroyed in the attack. Houthi Ansarullah fighters and allies also shelled two other military camps in Jizan with no report available on possible casualties.

Other sources said an attack by forces loyal to Saudi Arabia was repelled in Jawf province in northern Yemen.

Saudi warplanes continued to bombard residential areas in northern and southern Yemen. Reports said one person was killed in an artillery attack by Saudi Arabia’s mercenaries in Jawf.

More than 12,000 have been killed since Riyadh unleashed the campaign against Yemen in March 2015. The campaign’s aim was to push back revolutionary fighters from Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, and reinstate Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, the president who has resigned and is a staunch ally of Riyadh.

Houthis and forces loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh, a former president, decided to form a unity government last year after Hadi and Saudis rejected a roadmap for peace proposed at the end of lengthy negotiations in Kuwait, which came under the auspices of the United Nations.
