Clip shows Syria militants whipping men

A new video shows foreign-backed militants in Syria whipping two men for violating marriage procedures based on their interpretation of Islam.

The incident has occurred in the northwestern city of Saraqeb in Aleppo Province, where a court formed by the militants issued a verdict to flog the men for what they claimed was violation of marriage traditions.

The two were whipped for acting against the way the militants carry out the marriage procedure.

The al-Qaeda-affiliated Salafi militants in Syria have conducted similar acts in over two years of turmoil in the country. They say their own interpretation is the only correct way of implementing the rules of Islam.

Unrest has gripped Syria since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says that the chaos in the country is being orchestrated from outside, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

On Sunday, the Syrian army conducted successful operations in the central province of Homs to clear the town of al-Qusayr of the militant groups. Qusayr is a strategic town located on the border with Lebanon.

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad said on May 18 that militants from 29 different countries were fighting against the government in different parts of the country.
