Report: Syrian women in refugee camps facing abuse by rich Arabs

Syrian women in refugee camps

Syrian women who are living in refugee camps in the neighboring countries are facing sexual abuse and are being sold to rich men from the Persian Gulf Arab littoral states, local media reports unveiled.
A report by the Syrian Al-Mayadeen website said that Syrian women in refugee camps in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan are facing a tragic fate and are sent to the Persian Gulf Arab littoral states by human-traffickers.

They are abused by rich men in these states in return for small amounts of money, the report added.

Also, a similar report published by the European Parliament website on April 12 gave more information about the tragic situation of the Syrian women.

“Information has reached us about the tragic situation of Syrian women seeking refuge in Jordanian refugee camps, where women and girls, some under 14 years of age, are being sexually abused by wealthy men, many of whom come from neighboring countries and the Persian Gulf and who are legally able to enter into ‘temporary marriages’ with these women and girls and then abandon them soon afterwards, not infrequently leaving them pregnant. The families of the ‘brides’ agree to this in exchange for money,” the report said.

On International Women’s Day, March 8, the Associated Press reported that “scores of the Syrian women who escaped to Jordan are turning to prostitution, some forced or sold into it, even by their families.”

Female refugees have also become easy prey for pimps or traffickers, added the article, as Syrian women and girls are now being sold to rich men in the Persian Gulf Arab states, the report added.
