Senior Diplomat: Palestinian Issue Still Iran’s Priority

A rectangular hilltop compound in Jerusalem is ground zero of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, it is Islam’s third holiest spot and is home to an iconic golden-domed shrine. But to Jews it is the Temple Mount, their holiest place. A senior Iranian diplomat underlined that despite certain Arab states which have forgotten the Palestinians, the freedom of Quds is still a priority for Tehran.

“The Palestinian issue tops Iran’s foreign policy and we have always announced this to our friends and enemies,” the head of the Iranian foreign ministry’s first Middle-East and North Africa office, Hamidreza Dehqani poudeh, said on Sunday.

Stressing that Iran will continue its policy of campaign against the arrogant powers, he expressed regret that certain Muslim countries and their rulers have put the issue of Quds as their second and third priority, “but for Iran the issue is still the first priority”.

His remarks came as millions of Muslims across the world are preparing to participate in the International Quds Day rallies on Friday to voice support for the Palestinian nation against the Israeli regime.

The International Quds Day was started by the late Founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, in 1979 as a way of expressing solidarity with the Palestinians and underscoring importance of the holy Quds to Muslims.

International Quds Day is an annual event opposing Israel’s occupation of Beitul-Muqaddas. Anti-Zionist rallies and demonstrations are held on the last Friday of Ramadan in Muslim and Arab countries around the world, and especially in Iran.
