Senior Tories warn UK PM on Scottish independence

Senior Conservatives have warned British Prime Minister David Cameron that Scottish people would vote for independence in the forthcoming referendum.

Prime Minister’s election strategist Lynton Crosby said Scottish First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) Alex Salmond could pull off a “shock victory” on Scottish independence next year.

Prominent Scottish Conservatives, including former Scottish Secretary Lord Forsyth, also raised concerns over the country’s breakaway from the UK and accused the British government of complacency over the issue.

“It’s time England woke up and that we, as partners in the United Kingdom, work out how we’re going to move forward and ensure that a reckless decision to break up the United Kingdom is not made in September,” Forsyth said.

Senior Tories also warned the PM that the future of the United Kingdom is in jeopardy as the cross-party anti-independence campaign, led by former Labour chancellor Alistair Darling, founders.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson is among Tory critics of Darling’s Better Together campaign, which focuses heavily on the grave economic risks in case of independence.

Darling has repeatedly claimed that the risks could include the possibility of not being allowed to keep the pound, a rise in the cost of living and being denied EU membership.

Johnson, however, believes the campaign’s approach is wrong and potentially damaging and that it could alienate voters.
