Shooting leaves US rapper dead in California

A shooting incident in East Oakland, California has left a popular American musician dead, according to police officials.

Bay Area rapper Dominic Newton, 37, was shot and killed Monday night in a shooting at 94th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard about 8:15 p.m.

Newton was shot in the head and was taken to Highland Hospital, but later was pronounced dead.

Police officers arrived at the scene to control the crowds and ask questions to witnesses.

Some of the witnesses heard several gun shots go off around, but no suspects have been identified or arrested so far.

Newton, also known as The Jacka, was originally from Pittsburg. He began his rap career in the late 1990s and joined Mob Figaz. He launched his solo career in 2001.

Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the United States.

The US averages 87 gun deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.

About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the United States at a cost of 2 to 3 billion dollars.
