Six US warplanes destroyed in attack on Camp Bastion in Afghanistan

Six US fighter jets have been destroyed and two US Marines have been killed in an attack carried out by the Taliban on Camp Bastion military base in southern Afghanistan.

NATO said in a statement issued on Sunday that the six aircraft were destroyed on September 14 after a dozen attackers, dressed in US army uniforms and armed with rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles, stormed the base in Helmand Province.

Lieutenant Colonel Hagen Messer, a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, said the scale of damage was unprecedented.

The NATO statement added that three refueling stations were also destroyed and six aircraft hangars damaged in the attack.

The attack was “well-coordinated” and carried out by around 15 Taliban militants, who were organized into three teams and who penetrated the perimeter fence, the statement said.

“The insurgents appeared to be well equipped, trained and rehearsed.”

The attack comes as anti-US sentiment has been on the rise across Afghanistan over a blasphemous US-made anti-Islam movie that insults Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
