Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered a major call-up of police reservists, as clashes escalate between Palestinian protesters and Israelis in the occupied West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

According to the Israeli premier’s order on Saturday, Israeli forces will be reinforced by as many as 13 companies of reservists to boost preparedness from Sunday.

Netanyahu said the Tele Aviv regime “will continue to do all that is necessary.”

It is said that a total of between 1,300 and 2,000 extra personnel will be deployed for the matter.

The premier “approved the mobilization of 13 Border Police companies, in addition to the three that have already been mobilized,” the Netanyahu office said in a statement on Saturday.

The forces will be deployed mainly in and around East al-Quds (Jerusalem) and on certain major roads.

Bentzi Sau, an Israeli police official, had said earlier this week that the area of East al-Quds (Jerusalem) would be reinforced with 2,000 officers.

“We are at a very high level of preparedness,” said Sau, adding, “That said, you have to remember that we are working with a lack of resources. Yesterday, the prime minister directed me to present within two weeks a program to significantly reinforce the Israeli Police.”

There has been increasing confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians over the past weeks.

The tension was triggered by Tel Aviv’s imposition on August 26 of sweeping restrictions on entries into the compound of the al-Aqsa Mosque in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) and Israeli settlers’ repeated storming of the mosque.

The Palestinian Authority’s Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs said in a statement released on Saturday that Israeli forces have nabbed at least 650 Palestinians since the beginning of October.

Scores of Israeli troops swooped on the Shu’fat camp on October 9, blocking all of its entries and thus prompting confrontation with the Palestinians, the Palestinian Safa news website reported.

A day earlier, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein expressed extreme concern over the escalation of tensions in the occupied territories, urging an end to the violence. The official also warned about the rising number of Palestinians injured by live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas used by Israeli forces.
